History

The Spritz originated in 19th-century northern Italy during the Austro-Hungarian occupation, when soldiers diluted wine with water. Over time, this practice evolved to incorporate bitter liqueurs like Aperol, created in 1919 in Padua. The modern recipe was solidified during the 20th century with the combination of prosecco, Aperol, and soda water. Its popularity has grown significantly in recent decades, becoming a symbol of the Italian lifestyle. Although variations exist with other liqueurs, the Aperol Spritz is the most widespread internationally.
